Careless Greetings from the Senate of Pakistan!

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Senator Sameen Siddiqui, a friend otherwise and a very able parliamentarian, got this blow before Eid! Her staff got Eid Cards printed for her to send off to her contacts. And guess what! They printed my signatures above her name instead of her own! Look at the scanned image of the card! :)))))

"I'm (name), male, age (years), living in (city). Would you like to be my friend?"

This are but few messages I've recieved in my FaceBook Inbox since last couple of days. I'm sure most of women on FB, MySpace, Orkut etc, keep recieving such messages many times a day. Can some one make me understand, what purpose these stupidly thought and written messages serve for the senders? What do they mean by such hazy and vague thoughts?

What one implies when one asks these rather unthinkingly and naively phrased questions? Does that mean "friendship" is a downloading process that can be switched on with one click? And that the only elements that trigger a "friendship" are gender (read sex), age, geopgraphy etc? And why we do not understand that a relationship has to be cultivated rather than being "switched on" like this.

More importantly, why do men (in general, but obviously exceptions are there to prove the rule!) take women as a consumable thing? A commodity that should look a certain way. And since it looks a certain way, advances could be made towards it? And what pushes them to name such advances, as "friendship"?

Many a times I fail to understand if the statement is made about me, or a kitchen item! e.g.,
you're hot and spicy . . . or aap bohot namkeen hein, you are swwetly sexy . . . and so on and so forth!
oh my lord!!!!!!! Such disregard for human dignity! Such disrespect to human-ness of women! And you know what, most of the time, I reply them with a sentence or two, asking if I look hotter than their mother? Guess what? Almost 99% of the times, the reply is full of naked abuses. They can't take it! Then what makes them do something to other women which they don't like to be done to their "own" women? Because in that too, women are commodified and "owned". And you don't listen anything against your own car, and your sister / wife!

The question is, how can we change it? Or are we really convinced that it should be changed? Because whenever I've raised this question on my FB or Twitter status messages, I've invariably met with a massive onslaught by menfolk defending this attitude of their brethren. This was actually stranger and more serious. It makes me really sad that we've sunken to this level that can't even differentiate between a coomon good and bad! So much to talk of religion (which is all about morality and ethics) and "eastern traditions"!

Sanaa Khwaan-e-Taqdees-e-Mashriq Kahaan hein???

I'm sorry if this note bothers you, it surely does not apply to you, but please help me understand this phenomenon. Thanks.
Bewildered,
Marvi

PTV Bans All Anti-Taliban News Items. Is It?

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/news/world/pakistan/PTV-News-headed-by-jihadi-blacks-out-anti-Talban-news/articleshow/5056156.cms

I'm not an avid viewer of PTV or PTV News, so never realized that anti Talban news items have been banned from all PTV channels. I wonder if this is true. The Times of India published it as a news item on September 25, 2009 in their website edition. If this is true, it is really strategic and issue should be raised on different platforms and be made a topic of discussion among people because it shows a big dichotomy in government's policy of fighting the terrorism of TTP in Pakistan.

If someone knows the truth, please put in the comments underneath this post. Extremely grateful!

Khatray Mein Islam Naheen!

Sunday, September 27, 2009

Khatra Hey Zardaaron ko
girti hoi diwaaron ko
sadiyon key bimaaron ko
Khatrey mein islam nahin

saari zamin ko gherey hoyay hein aakhir chand gharanay kion
naam nabi ka leney walay ulfat se begaanay kyon

Khatra hey khoon khwaaron ko
rang barangi kaaro ko
amreeca key piyaron ko
khatray mein isam nahin

Aaj hmaray na'ron se larza hey bapa aiwaanon mein
bik na sakein gey hasrat-o-arman oonchi saji dokaanon mein

Khatra hey bat maaron ko
maghrib key bazaaron ko
choron ko makkaron ko
khatray mein islam nahin

amn ka percham ley key utho her insan se piyar kar
apna tau manshoor hey jalib saaray jahaan se piyar karo

khatra hey darbaaron ko
shaahon key ghamkhwaaron o
nawwaabon, ghidaaron k
khatray mein islam nahin

Habeeb Jalib started screaming it around three decades ago and the situation still seems the same. Those who have been against the creation of this fateful country, claimed its sole ownership (read proprietorship) soon after it came into being. Surfing through the pages of old issues of Daily Dawn a news item caught my attention lately. It showed a women's rally in Lahore asking for Shariah. Well asking for Shariah Law is not something unusual these days, but the news item was dated January 1948. Yes, that early!

And after-wards, these obscurantists kept on not only growing like mushrooms, but also multiplied their influence on state machinery and consolidated themselves among the people. Now everything that questions status quo, is termed either "non-islamic" or "unpatriotic". And its couple of clerics and few hawkish media men who give you the certificate of being Islamic and patriotic. In following blindly what they're saying, we often forget that that its not Islam that is at stake, it is vested interest of some individuals / groups that is!

Congratulations Pakistan!

On this 27th day of September 2009, Pakistan has won a cricket match against India. We're happy, very happy indeed. But here lies our collective national character. Our media is replete with comments like 'Pakistan won against its rivaayeti hareef (traditional rival)'. We aren't happy because we've won a match, we're happy because we've won against INDIA - the enemy. Is this euphoria rooted somewhere in our subconscious latent sense of inferiority? We can't beat India in arts, culture, media, science, technology, intellectual input to the philosophy, etc. The cricket is the easiest way out. Let's won against India and vent out all our frustration of inferiority! The most lamentable fact is that maturer, older generation joins youngsters in this celebration of hatred and complexes.

Now, by doing this, we're not only undermining our own potential as a nation but also doing a disservice to sports. A sports person spirit does not only teach the ethics of failure, but also, the ethics of success. Do we want to learn? Or should we continue with our hatred? Do we really think that this choice of loath is going to win us a national prestige and be a healer to our collective ego? Can this win us a victory stand of knowledge and wisdom among the comity of nation?

Please comment. Let's generate a debate here.

Aik Shaheed Ko Bhaint

Gyaani Tera Gyaan Tha Jhoota
Imam zamin rakhsha bandhan,
sab oyay bekar
waashna ki vijay hoi aur
prajaa ki preet thi haari

mein abhaagan prem pujaari,
aur saary jan ssattiya ke bari
bus satta thi raj kumaari
jo senaa pati ko bhaai

us nay naag ka roop jo dhaara
aisa vish dharti pe utaara
pakhshi bhi ho gayay thay kaari

baabul tu nay ik din kaha tha
bitiya,
"mrittiyo jo chhoyay gi mujh ko
hamaala kay bhi neer bahein gay"
kia maloom tha ik din baabul,

Raakshison ko ik baar phir se
aisi vijay milay ki amber
lahoo kay neer bahaaye ga
aur paani saloon ho ho ker
nainon say beh naheen paaye ga

Mein nay tau bus sach hay baabul
teri adhoori peet nihaarna chaahi thi
sangdilon nay preet ko bhi
lahoo lahoo ker daalaa ik din

Per baba, teri raajkumaari
ka wishwaas naheen abhi haara
maas ko chun chun khaanay waalay
kaagaa bhi ye jaantay hein
sapna mer naheen sakta hay

Teri dherti kay sab raam lakhshman,
Krishan, Shyaam, Abhay aur Vishnu
Raawan kay naash ka sapna lay ker
samay ki aag mein kooday hein

Ab dekhein is yug ka bhagwan
kesay hamein haraata hay!!!
